MAY'S MIX AND MINGLE OF PLANTS

I was able to visit a 20 year old woodland pathway garden last week at (wholesale only) Hoffman Nursery.  I was picking up Carex flacca to add to an experimental shady opening at the edge of my woodland. Hoffman Nursery specializes in ornamental grasses and sedges that they ship all over the Unites States.  While there I strolled a simple path populated with a lovely array of deer tolerant plants.  As I walked along, the dappled light shone on the ground covers keeping my eye glued to the sides of the garden.  My favorite plant for texture and spring interest greetede at the start, Helleborus x hybrida.

Moving along, I recognized another workhorse of gardens in woodlands, Euphorbia robbiae and in the distance repeating swaths of Carex pennsylvanica.

The ample patch of Carex pennsylvanica 'cleansing the pallet' so to speak' surrounded a beautifully placed boulder.

Looking back and over the C. pennsylvanica towards the warming sun coming through the trees,
Variegated Soloman's Seal was at the edge and slowly encroaching on the sea of Carex.

A splash of Iris tectorum could be seen in the distance and ended this delightful experience set against an Illicium floridanum.

Exiting the path I wandered to a couple of other beautiful shady vignettes.  A grove of Yellow Timber Bamboo (Sarah P. Duke Gardens also has an impressive grove) and the brocaded shadows supplied by the emerging leaves of 'Forest Pansy' Redbud.

The final stop was an introduction to their newest garden. One devoted entirely to Carex. I can't wait to get started with my experimental carpet.
